Kazakhstan E-Commerce Market Overview

Kazakhstan's e-commerce sector continues to grow at double-digit rates, moving steadily toward maturity as a retail category. Here's what the latest data from Kazakhstan's Bureau of National Statistics, the National Bank of Kazakhstan, and PwC's industry reporting show.

Market size: nearing $8 billion

In 2024, Kazakhstan's retail e-commerce market reached 3.4 trillion tenge (around $6 billion), growing 42% year-on-year. Through 2025, the market continued expanding, approaching 3.8 trillion tenge (roughly $8 billion). E-commerce now accounts for around 15% of total retail trade in the country — up substantially from just a few years ago.

Marketplaces shape the market

Marketplaces account for more than 90% of Kazakhstan's total retail e-commerce volume. Kaspi.kz holds over 70% of that volume, with Wildberries around 17%. Cross-border sales through foreign platforms — particularly Russian marketplaces — grew an estimated 50-80% year-on-year in 2024, expanding product range and access for Kazakhstani shoppers.

A cashless economy

According to the National Bank of Kazakhstan, cashless transactions made up 98% of all payment transactions by number and 87% by value as of mid-2025. There are 81.2 million payment cards in circulation in a country of roughly 20 million people. Most cashless activity flows through internet and mobile banking rather than POS terminals.

Consumer behavior

Kazakhstanis made 162 million online purchases in 2024, an 87% increase over the previous year. The average basket value dropped to around 21,200 tenge (roughly $40-45), pointing to a shift toward more frequent, lower-value purchases. Card payment remains the preferred checkout method.

What it means

Kazakhstan's growth isn't a one-off spike — it's built on high internet penetration (93%), a maturing payment infrastructure, and a fast-growing marketplace ecosystem. For international merchants and payment companies, the window to enter with the right, localized payment infrastructure is still open — but it's narrowing as the market consolidates around a handful of major platforms.

Processing.kz continues to track this market and connect international partners to Kazakhstan's payment infrastructure.
